About 41 percent of the people in India think that it is 『sometimes acceptable』 for a news organisation to favour one political party over others when reporting news compared to 25 percent who think it’s 『never acceptable』, a poll by Pew Research Centre revealed. A third of the Indians remained mum on the question.

The poll puts India as the only country among those where the poll was conducted where over 40% public believe biases in political news reporting is not so bad.

Israel and the Philippines also has a large number of people, 43 percent and 41 percent, respectively, opining that biases were acceptable in political news reporting but the majority of public there thought otherwise.

Apart from these three countries, all countries strongly believe that biases are 'never acceptable' in news reporting. Globally, three-fourths of the respondents of the poll said that favouring one political party over other by media is not acceptable.

Lately, with a spurt of social media and multiple online news platforms, the accusations of biases in news reporting and fake news has grown exponentially. Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a gathering last year had also voiced his concerns and said that the media must make an extra effort to maintain credibility.

However, a two-thirds of the Indians think that media represent different positions fairly and an overwhelming 72 percent think that the government leaders and officials are adequately represented in the media.

Nearly three-fourths of the public thinks that the media is doing well to cover most important news events. Interestingly, 80 percent of the Indian respondents believe that media reports are accurate in the country.  This number is second highest in the world, closely behind the Netherlands where 82 percent of the people think that media reports are accurate.
